Plates prevent part corrosion, save department equipment and significant money
Each winter season, salt falling from the spreader unit onto valves and vital parts was causing widespread corrosion and failure. District 1 Shop Superintendent Dustin Chase came up with an inexpensive solution – stainless steel plates that cost $400 per truck in a one-time expense, but save about $900 per unit annually. Also factor in the increased reliability of the trucks, and it’s a winning formula.

Department plans 18 highway construction projects in eastern Idaho
The Idaho Transportation Department plans 18 highway construction projects in eastern Idaho this year. Work on the estimated $38.7-million batch of projects will enhance and preserve state highways.

Child Passenger Safety
McKinnon named child passenger safety coordinator for Idaho
Children who are motor vehicle passengers have a new statewide champion. Carma McKinnon, from Carmen, Idaho, was recently selected to lead Idaho’s child passenger safety efforts. As the program’s new coordinator, she will provide centralized leadership, support and oversight of Idaho’s child passenger safety program, which will be hosted by Lemhi County.

From its beginnings in 1974, when the agency officially became the Idaho Transportation Department, to today, ITD has been home to many honors, innovations and milestones. Along the way, the department has amassed 600 awards or honors, including a record-setting 53 last year alone.

Limited access to Elk City restored March 24
Travel through the blocked stretch of Idaho 14 west of Elk City resumed on a limited basis for local traffic only Thursday morning, March 24, after crews successfully reduced a large boulder threatening highway cleanup into smaller, manageable pieces.

Broadway Avenue Bridge construction reaches major milestone
Media representatives were invited to film footage and conduct interviews as girders were placed for the new Broadway Bridge over the Boise River Tuesday, March 22. ITD escorted reporters into the work zone as large steel girders were delivered and placed for the new bridge deck.

Encore (03-18-16) Construction of Thornton Interchange begins Monday (March 21)
Construction of the Thornton Interchange on U.S. Highway 20 north of Thornton will begin Monday (March 21). The project is scheduled for completion in October. Nearly 20,000 vehicles per day travel through this area now.

Encore (03-18-16) Shuttle resumes April 11 for cyclists in I-90 Mullan-to-Montana project
Cyclists will again be shuttled through the I-90 construction zone in northern Idaho as the reconstruction project continues this summer from Mullan to the Montana state line, which includes the popular Lolo Pass recreation area. This unique service is designed to enhance safety through the work zone, which can be particularly dangerous for bicyclists.

Encore (03-18-16) Southern Idaho bridge work continues, road-work season beginning
Warmer temperatures in southern Idaho mean more than trees budding and grass growing — they also signal the start of another busy year of construction and maintenance on area roadways. While several bridge projects are ongoing from 2015, new work will focus on bridge maintenance and pavement surfacing projects throughout the Magic Valley region.
