ITD loses Ken Clausen, bridge maestro, March 17
Kenneth Duane Clausen, designer of the new Broadway Bridge being constructed over the Boise River near Boise State, died of natural causes March 17 at age 56.

Barrus fills slot as State’s Design/Traffic Engineer in Sablan’s absence
Jesse Barrus will arrive in Boise April 4 to fill the vacancy left by the departure of Kevin Sablan, ITD’s State Design/Traffic Engineer, to Washington, D.C. for a one-year AASHTO fellowship. Barrus earned the position from a statewide candidate pool in a competitive process.

Public Transportation
ITD Public Transportation office collaborates with Idaho State Police on vehicle inspections
ITD's Public Transportation office has a statewide inventory of 600 vehicles, and holds the title to 144 of those. Recognizing a need to monitor the useful life of vehicles and assess the need for replacement, the office is collaborating with the Idaho State Police on a new and innovative vehicle safety program.

Transportation board visits District 2 during late March meeting
The Idaho Transportation Board visited District 2 March 23-24, focusing initially on Idaho County and the Idaho 14 landslide west of Elk City. Reports were also heard on the 129,000 lb. truck routes, highway-safety initiatives, and other district issues

Wind-speed warning part of U.S. 93 message sign installation underway in south-central Idaho
Work began March 28 to install a permanent dynamic message sign along U.S. 93 for traffic driving southbound between Interstate 84 and Twin Falls to help alert drivers about any oncoming roadway issues or provide safety messages.

Boise’s JUMP project wins American Concrete Association "Excellence" award
A huge quantity of concrete was used in Jack’s Urban Meeting Place, for which the Intermountain Chapter of the American Concrete Association recently rewarded the massive JUMP project with an "Excellence in Concrete" award at a ceremony in Salt Lake City.

Department History
From the ITD Vault: Department metric conversion to continue full-speed-ahead
The attempt at forced conversion to the metric system obviously did not resonate here at ITD or in the United States as a whole. In fact, the dual speedometer with miles per hour and kilometers per hour might be as close as some of us ever come.

District 1
Encore (03-25-16): Plates prevent corrosion, save department equipment and significant money
Each winter season, salt falling from the spreader unit onto valves and vital parts was causing widespread corrosion and failure. District 1 Shop Superintendent Dustin Chase came up with an inexpensive solution – stainless steel plates that cost $400 per truck in a one-time expense, but save about $900 per unit annually. Also factor in the increased reliability of the trucks, and it’s a winning formula.

Child Passenger Safety
Encore (03-25-16): McKinnon named child passenger safety coordinator for Idaho
Children who are motor vehicle passengers have a new statewide champion. Carma McKinnon, from Carmen, Idaho, was recently selected to lead Idaho’s child passenger safety efforts. As the program’s new coordinator, she will provide centralized leadership, support and oversight of Idaho’s child passenger safety program, which will be hosted by Lemhi County.
