New platforms provide osprey housing, enable bridge safety inspections
The Federal Highway Administration requires an inspection of the Dent Bridge on the Clearwater River north of Orofino every two years, but ITD could not inspect the overhead cable saddles because of nesting osprey, which are federally protected migratory birds. The solution was an environmentally responsible innovation.

Meridian Road Interchange rebuild wins engineering achievement award
The recently completed reconstruction of the Meridian Interchange, originally built in 1965, won the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Southern Idaho section award for Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement this week, for projects costing greater than $10 million category.

Pocatello’s South Valley Connector wins another Project of the Year award
The South Valley Connector project in Pocatello picked up a second “Project of the Year” award last week, being named the Institute of Transportation Engineers (Intermountain Chapter) award winner April 21. The project had previously been named American Public Works Association Rocky Mountain Chapter Project of the Year.

ITD northern Idaho crew recognized by Gateway Fire group for service
The Gateway Fire Protection District, in Plummer, recently sent a letter to ITD’s District 1 office to recognize the snow-removal efforts of the crew serving that area.

Juniper Rest Area now open for use after repairs following vandalism to westbound facility
Repairs have been made to the westbound Juniper Rest Area and the facility has reopened for use, following extensive vandalism in early February. The men’s restroom had been closed since the incident.

Donate Life
ITD receives award for work with organ donor program
From hard choices come new hopes for those in need of life-saving transplants. On Wednesday, April 20, ITD Headquarters’ employees heard personal stories of hope rising from sadness as part of National Donate Life Month. For many years, ITD’s Driver Services Section has been a supporter of organ, eye and tissue donation. That commitment and support earned an award from Intermountain Donor Services.

From the ITD Vault 30 Years Ago: Freeway Fledglings
Several birds have found free housing along Idaho's freeways. Thanks to a joint project by three government organizations, nesting boxes were mounted on the backs of highway signs for the kestrel, North America's smallest falcon. Kestrels dine on grasshoppers, dragonflies, lizards and mice, which abound on the median strips of southwestern Idaho's highways.

Encore (04-22-16): Annual Idaho Byways Advisory Committee meeting set for May 5 in Moscow
Idaho Byways, Idaho Transportation Department updates and the Hells Canyon Scenic Byway extension will lead discussion when the Idaho Byways Advisory Council (IBAC) meets Thursday, May 5. The meeting is open to the public and will be held from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Centennial Room at the Best Western University Inn, 1516 Pullman Rd., in Moscow.
