Vault: ITD remembers '95 Noseeum Creek flooding on US-12
When moisture-packed hillsides gave way and 600,000 pounds of mud, rock, trees and other debris obliterated 1,200 feet of highway on Nov. 20, 1995, it created “the biggest slide of my career,” said Mark Schuster, maintenance foreman for US-12 for the last three decades.

Tech Support
IT for districts improves remote shed connections, saves $40K
Powell, Fleming and Reeds Bar are three of the most remote maintenance sheds in D2. Getting good, reliable internet connections to the sheds for NOAA monitoring, vital communications from operations, or linking to other sheds for support or coordination was sketchy, and expensive.

D2 support for HQ lab turns into leadership role for Clawson
Since mid-September, four District 2 employees have traveled to Boise to support the lab with mix-design confirmation and hot mix asphalt testing for all districts. For one of them, the temporary relocation became permanent.

District Collaboration
Districts come together to patch Interstate bridge
After months of preparation with multiple delays and last-minute changes, crews were finally able to repair the Interstate 15 Blackfoot bridge. Crews from several different districts came together as one big team to help fix the bridge and pull off one of the biggest traffic-control plans for ITD internally.

Safety Corner
Chainsaw chaps save the day in eastern Idaho
A pair of chainsaw chaps saved the day (not to mention legs) recently for a member of the District 6 Salmon Maintenance Crew. Earlier this fall, Jeff Eagle’s Salmon crew was cutting brush and trees away from the side of the highway to improve sight distance for motorists to reduce wildlife-vehicle hits.

HQ Power Outage Nov. 20 shows readiness
No loss in computer service or the ability to conduct business resulted from a power outage Nov. 20 thought to have been caused by an errant bird meeting a transformer. Emergency generators kicked on as planned and remained in operation until power levels were stabilized.
