Legislature
January always marks
the beginning of an interesting period
in Boise. Attention becomes more focused.
The pace quickens. People roll up their
sleeves. The business of state government
assumes added importance as legislators
return to Boise to make critical decisions
that affect every Idahoan.

Initiative: Connecting Idaho
(excerpts from State
of the State Address)

to enhance Idaho's highways, improve safety
and expand commerce. It's a vision I call
"Connecting Idaho." Who would
have thought that in our lifetime that we
could be talking about a safe, multi-lane
highway from the capital city, all the way
to the Canadian border?"

Hutchinson assume new duties
The retirement
of Jim Ross as chief engineer in December
challenged ITD Director Dave Ekern to find
a suitable replacement. The process to find
a permanent replacement will begin in March.

Bryant's
photos take firsts in FHWA competition
Two
photographs by ITD’s Dan Bryant
were awarded first place in a national
competition sponsored last fall by the
Federal Highway Administration. Bryant,
a maintenance foreman in Banks, took top
honors in the close-up category for his
photograph of Douglas’ Brodiaea,
a purple wildflower. It was taken in May
at about milepost 72 of Idaho 55. He also
received first place in the planted natives
division for his photograph of a firecracker
penstemon, taken along Idaho 55.

District
6 engineer to head Enterprise Architecture
Bill
Shaw, currently a project development
engineer in District 6, recently was
named manager of ITD’s new Enterprise
Architecture group and will begin shaping
its development on Jan. 18. Enterprise
Architecture is a new “best practice”
model that ultimately will encompass
most of ITD’s business processes.

Motorists have two new license plate
options
The
2004 Idaho Legislature added two new
special interest license plates to help
promote Historic Lewiston and Idaho
School Transportation Safety Awareness.
These new plates are scheduled to go
on sale at local county auto-licensing
offices beginning Monday (Jan. 10).
The
new plates may be displayed on passenger
vehicles only, light trucks with a maximum
gross vehicle weight of 26,000 pounds,
motor homes and camper trailers (excluding
horse, car, and cargo trailers with
living facilities).

generosity makes holidays brighter
ITD Headquarters employees
opened their checkbooks as well as their hearts
to make the holidays more festive last month.
A late blitz before Christmas collected more than
$450 for the family of an ITD employee stricken
by hard financial conditions and also assisted
children from a nearby elementary school to help
the family of a badly burned second-grade student
