Board
commits additional resources to employee salaries
The
Idaho Transportation Board, in a special session Thursday,
took a positive step in addressing the salary needs
of ITD employees. The board approved a resolution
that commits $5.3 million of the department’s
personnel savings to employee compensation –
adding to the 3 percent ($2.6 million) increase recently
authorized by the Legislature and signed into law
by Gov. Kempthorne.

New
signals to speed travel in Pocatello, Chubbuck
Motorists traveling on major routes through Pocatello
and Chubbuck should have smoother sailing and fewer
delays at intersections as a result of a significant
upgrade to the traffic signal system, the Idaho
Transportation Department announces. The first noticeable
changes are taking place now, explains Dan Harelson
of the District 5 ITD office.

EEO conference planned in Post Falls
Business operators who qualify under federal guidelines
as a Disadvantage Business Enterprise will join
ITD staff members at a two-day conference in March
to become more familiar with changes in the federal
program. EEO 2006 is organized jointly by the department’s
Equal Employment Opportunity office and Human Resources.

New
service planned between Lewiston and Moscow
Valley
Transit Executive Director Tom LaPointe’s
face lights up and he gets an excited grin on his
face when he catches a glimpse of a Moscow Valley
Transit bus passing by. These days he has plenty
to smile about. Moscow Valley Transit is scheduled
to start routes between Moscow and Lewiston in February.
MVT will charge riders for the service. A fee schedule
is yet to be released. Routes within Moscow are
free.

Defensive
driving class available online in Boise area
Learning to improve defensive driving skills will
move from the classroom to the Internet on a trial
basis as ITD pilots a new on-line option offered
through Boise State University. ITD employees in
the Boise area now have the option of taking the
basic content of the Defensive Driving class and
completing a proctored exam.

develops map showing Legislative districts
Idaho legislators, from Eric Anderson in
the far northern panhandle to JoAn E. Wood
in eastern Idaho’s 35th district,
can be associated with geographic regions
and recognized by party affiliation on a
map that recently was updated by the department
and published on the Legislature’s
Web site.

Plowing
the way for safe winter travel
Connie Marshall drives truck for a living.
At least in the winter. She takes the helm
of a yellow ITD snowplow truck when weather
turns nasty and begins piling up in white
layers on Idaho’s highways. Working
out of District 3, Marshall will become
a recognizable spokesperson for snowplow
safety as the transportation department
begins running radio and television commercials
throughout Idaho this month.

to mark 50th anniversary of Interstate system
Leaders of the group representing America’s
state departments of transportation joined
members of Congress, Michigan officials
and the chairman of a transportation technology
group at a news conference Jan. 11 announcing
a year of activities celebrating the 50th
anniversary – and the future –
of the U.S. Interstate Highway System.
