Safety summit focuses on drugs, seat belts, enforcement
It wasn’t crash analysis pictures, statistics or even graphic photographs of lives ravaged by methamphetamine use that silenced a room full of highway safety professionals last week. It was a group of images showing neglected children burned or contaminated by caustic chemicals used in the drug’s production.

ITD explains winter maintenance to South Koreans
Ron Wright, chemist supervisor, recently met with a delegation from the South Korea Expressway Corporation in Coeur d’Alene to discuss corrosion inhibited deicer chemicals, winter maintenance programs and corrosion issues to the highway infrastructure.The Korean group is building the new Incheon Bridge structures and is extremely concerned about the aspects of corrosion from the use of straight salt.

Family outings turn into cleanup campaigns
What began as a family effort to keep the community of Harvard free of highway debris has turned into a 13-year commitment to Idaho’s Adopt-A-Highway program and honors as the District 2 group of the year. Idaho Transportation Board member Bruce Sweeney and District 2 Adopt-A-Highway coordinator Shane Niemela presented the district’s top award for 2006 to members of the Harvard Area Picker-Uppers.

Signal technician honored for contributions

Dale Moore isn’t content to leave his work hidden at a street corner. He welcomes opportunities to share it with others preparing to follow in his footsteps. For that willingness, the National Institute for Advanced Transportation Technology presented Moore with a plaque acknowledging his contributions to its research and education programs.

Statewide meetings to outline insurance options
A series of statewide meetings that explain the open enrollment process and health insurance options for state employees will begin next week and continue through May 11. The series is presented by the Department of Administration’s Office of Group Insurance.

Youths have become very creative – and daring – in their continual search for inexpensive and easily obtainable chemicals to produce highs. Increasingly they turn to inhalants instead of illicit drugs from local dealers.

Fitness challenge takes a long hike
ITD employees will have an opportunity to hike through Idaho during the next 10 weeks without wandering far from home – all in the name of improved fitness and better health This year’s fitness challenge “Centennial Trail: Hike thru Idaho” challenge begins Sunday (April 15) and continues through June 23.

District 5 opens defense of fitness trophy
District 5 employees flexes their muscles and proudly display their traveling trophy won in the 2006 I-Fitness exercise challenge. District 5 leads all districts with four wins in this annual ITD fitness event. The award is based on the percent of total employees that reach the exercise challenge goal.
