Board hears report on electronic bidding
ITD is making a transition to an electronic bidding system for highway construction projects. An electronic bidding process – “Bid Express” – will provide more convenience and improve accuracy of the bids, he said. The process will save ITD money on printing and mailing plans; the system also will check for errors, do math calculations and enforce business rules.

ITD adds construction projects to 511 system
Motorists now can get the latest updates on summer highway construction and tourism news through Idaho’s 511 travel information service. By dialing 511 or visiting 511.idaho.gov on the Web, travelers will be updated on summer highway construction projects, emergency closures, weather conditions and tourist information. Commercial vehicle information is also now available on the Web.

State employees... next week is your week
The Idaho Transportation Department joins other state agencies next week (May 1-5) in honoring employees for dedicated service to Idaho citizens. A week of random prize drawings will begin Monday. Individuals can pick up raffle tickets and check daily e-mail messages to discover if/what they won.

Slide closes one lane of Idaho 34
Idaho 34 became a victim of the region’s protracted wet spring recently when saturated soil gave out and caused a short segment of one lane between Soda Springs and Freedom, Wyo., to slide. ITD crews closed the segment and are assessing the damage and determining the best emergency repairs.

May in Motion good way to fight rising gas prices
Gas prices are rising faster than spring temperatures and river levels, forcing many motorists to take a second look at travel options they first considered during last summer’s practice round. If there’s a ray of sunshine piercing the current gas-price clouds in the Treasure Valley, it’s the opportunity to take advantage of public transportation.

Engineering group selects Loop as 'Fellow'
Stephen Loop, QPL (Qualified Products List) program administrator in ITD’s Materials Section, was recognized as a “Fellow” last week by the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE). His selection was announced at the April 22 board meeting in Washington, D.C.

Weight Watchers to watch weight disappear
A group of ITD employees, relatives and retirees committed to watching weight disappear recently formed a Weight Watchers group at Headquarters. The group will meet Tuesdays at noon to record their weight-loss results and encourage fellow participants in their campaign for improved health.

Bonding magazine outlines Connecting Idaho plan
The state plans to issue about $200 million in grant anticipation revenue vehicle bonds that will be repaid with future federal transportation grants. Idaho will join 14 states and two territories that have issued Garvees, according to the Federal Highway Administration. The issuance by the Idaho Housing & Finance Association is the first installment in a program that is slated to total $1.2 billion in Garvees over several years.
