assists in unique traffic signal, communication
link
A collaborative project began this week that will
link traffic signals in Moscow as part of a model
Intelligent Transportation System initiative. Power
Engineers Inc. of Lakewood, Colo., is installing
about 2.5 miles of underground electrical conduit
and fiber optic communication cable that will link
the city's traffic signals

fifth-grader receives national poster award
For 11-year-old Ben Johnson, winning
a national poster contest puts him one step closer
to becoming an architect. Or painter. Or sculptor.
Ben and other fifth-grade students gathered Friday
morning in the library at Shadow Hills Elementary
School to recognize his second-place win in the “One
Nation on the Move, National Transportation Week 5th
Grade Poster Contest.”

New RWIS sites, cameras
offer dual multiple benefits
ITD has launched a program that will more than double
the number of Road Weather Information Stations (RWIS)
statewide and adds cameras that give travelers visual
views of highway conditions. The $3.2 million contract
recently awarded to Vaisala, a Finland-based technology
company, will add 49 new sites to the 33 existing
RWIS locations by late spring of 2008.

Law enforcement to step
up holiday patrols
Saving lives by increasing seat belt use is why Idaho
is joining with states across the nation for the Click
it or Ticket mobilization that begins Monday (May
21) and continues through June 3. The Idaho State
Police and about 45 other Idaho law enforcement agencies,
along with agencies throughout the country, will be
out in full force enforcing seat belt laws in an effort
to save more lives

Insurance open enrollment
period ends May 30
The open enrollment period for state employees who
previously declined dependent dental or vision coverage
began Monday (May 14) and will continue through Wednesday,
May 30. The open enrollment period is the only time
of the year employees can enroll in the Flexible Spending
Account (FSA) program. Those who already participate
must re-enroll before the open enrollment deadline
or their enrollment will end on June 30.

Teens
to learn aviation from ground up
Navigating
small airplanes, launching a near-earth satellite
balloon and exploring Blackhawk helicopters are all
part of the Aviation Career Exploration (ACE) Academy,
June 25-28. The academy is hosted by the Idaho Transportation
Department’s Division of Aeronautics. Thirty
teens will have the opportunity to participate in
the academy, which is open to high school students
ages 14-18. Students must submit an application by
May 30.

garners six Idaho Press Club awards
ITD received six publications
awards – a first place, four seconds and an
honorable mention – May 5 at the annual Idaho
Press Club banquet in Boise. Mollie McCarty and Adam
Rush earned the top award in the Media Kit competition
for work to inform the news media and public about
rehabilitation of Rainbow Bridge.
