White crosses bearing the names of American military men and women symbolize the price paid by our military for our freedom. Certain cemeteries come to mind immediately: Arlington National Cemetery, the American Military Cemetery in Normandy and, of course, veterans' cemeteries in every state.

Missouri engineer shares insights on 'Practical Design'

The Missouri Department of Transportation shares the same problem as many state transportation departments – more needs than money. However, MODOT’s chief engineer believes that his department has found a way to attack the problem through what he terms Practical Design.

Board approves changes to rest area program
ITD will assume responsibilities for administration of the state’s Safety Rest Area program and districts will be asked to play a major role, announced Highway Operations and Safety Engineer Brent Jennings at the Idaho Transportation Board’s May meeting in Shoshone last week. Districts will be responsible for project development, construction, reconstruction and rehabilitation work and maintenance of facilities in their respective areas.

District 4 team joins Relay for Life
District 4 employees are making a difference in lives off the highway as well as on it.
They recently participated in the American Cancer Society "Relay for Life" in the fight against cancer. The team gathered funds through solicitations, bake sales, cinnamon roll sales, soup sales, and other endeavors.

June 1 event to formally kick off Safe Routes to Schools
Idaho’s First Lady Lori Otter will join school and law enforcement officials to formally introduce the state’s new Safe Routes to School program June 1 in a morning ceremony at Boise's Riverside Elementary School. Otter will be among six speakers who will offer support to the new federally funded program that encourages children to walk or bicycle to and from school.

New program allocates $1.5 million in funds
Bowen Huntsman, who co-chairs the Safe Routes to Schools advisory committee with Molly O'Reilly of Sandpoint, presented an overview of the program to the Idaho Transportation Board last week. He also requested reimbursements of more than $1.5 million for infrastructure and non-infrastructure projects in every district of the state.

District 4 honors groups for cleanup efforts

The Shoshone-based team contributed $6,468 to the Relay for Life effort and cancer research.

Law enforcement to step up holiday patrols

Saving lives by increasing seat belt use is why Idaho is joining with states across the nation for the Click it or Ticket mobilization that begins Monday (May 21) and continues through June 3. The Idaho State Police and about 45 other Idaho law enforcement agencies, along with agencies throughout the country, will be out in full force enforcing seat belt laws in an effort to save more lives

Teens to learn aviation from ground up
Navigating small airplanes, launching a near-earth satellite balloon and exploring Blackhawk helicopters are all part of the Aviation Career Exploration (ACE) Academy, June 25-28. The academy is hosted by the Idaho Transportation Department’s Division of Aeronautics. Thirty teens will have the opportunity to participate in the academy, which is open to high school students ages 14-18. Students must submit an application by Wednesday, May 30.


Insurance open enrollment period ends Wednesday
The open enrollment period for state employees who previously declined dependent dental or vision coverage will end Wednesday, May 30. The open enrollment period is the only time of the year employees can enroll in the Flexible Spending Account (FSA) program. Those who already participate must re-enroll before the open enrollment deadline or their enrollment will end on June 30.
