Regardless of how well prepared we are, the first snowstorm of the season always awakens in us a respect for winter conditions and the need for caution while traveling. The first snowfall also serves as a reminder that safety is no accident.

Partnership takes sidewalks in new direction
When crossing Front and Myrtle streets in downtown Boise, pedestrians might notice the crosswalks allowing them to safely move from one side to the other are more artistic than they used to be. The circular patterns of red and white imbedded in the concrete represent the first result of a multiple agency effort to improve mobility and travel in the downtown Boise core.

Transportation museum gaining momentum
Antique vehicle enthusiasts are proposing a transportation museum in eastern idaho. It started at a corridor planning meeting in Ashton and a chance conversation between Ashton resident Tom Howell, whose hobby is collecting and restoring old military vehicles, and Cathy Koon, an ITD employee and history buff who is writing a history of transportation in old Fremont County.

Survivors to submit to jury of peers
The fate of two lone survivors who endured weeks of rigorous physical hardships and mental anguish to overcome their peers will be placed (partially) in the hands of innocent bystanders next week. Audience members who assemble to watch the conclusion of ITD's “AMS Survivor” challenge will have an opportunity to help determine who wins the 12-week series.

Best earthquake advice still is 'Drop, Cover & Hold'
When Cheryl Rost, manager of ITD Employee Safety, received an e-mail message that included 10 earthquake survival steps, she asked Mary Barlow-Brusse for input. The latter, who specializes in public education for the Ada City-County Emergency Management office in Boise, disagrees with an assertion that chances of survival are best outside of buildings.

Celebrities join in campaign to save teen drivers

Traffic crashes continue to be the leading cause of death in America for 15- to 20-year-olds, according to findings recently released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). To counter the trend, NHTSA and the Recording Artists, Actors and Athletes Against Drunk Driving (RADD) Coalition are promoting a new educational campaign emphasizing the importance of safe teen driving.

ITD site geared for young drivers
A web site sponsored by ITD's Office of Traffic and Highway Safety promotes safe driving practices among teens. The site, XTR4.com Teen Driver (“Xtra Training Resource for teens”), combines education and entertainment to prepare young drivers for their exams, help them better understand the principles behind Idaho's driving laws and ultimately reduce the number of fatal or serious-injury crashes.
