Studded tire use varies among states
Motorists traveling on Idaho highways this winter can use studded tires to improve vehicle handling. The use of studded tires is legal from Oct. 1 through April 30. While it is legal to use the tires the transportation department advises against it unless extreme conditions warrant. Studded tires are snow tires with small metal cleats embedded in the tread.

HRS to hold meetings for supervisors and managers regarding updated
State of Idaho Policies and Idaho Transportation Department Procedures

Human Resource Services will be meeting with ITD Supervisors and Managers in December to provide an overview of all statewide policies that have been implemented and are now being formalized into the ITD policy manual. The implementation date for all revised ITD policies is December 16, 2007.

Governor says he wants to see more efficiencies

The Idaho Transportation Board attended the Associated Taxpayers of Idaho annual conference luncheon in downtown Boise as part of its Nov. 14 business meeting. Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter was the keynote speaker. In his address, Gov. Otter acknowledged the need for additional revenue for the state’s transportation system.

POE inspectors look for violations, sometimes save lives

Mark Stroschein and the three other Ports of Entry inspectors serve as full-time “rovers,” monitoring truck traffic throughout District 6. Almost every day, they set up one or more temporary ports of entry at designated pull-out areas in the district’s nine counties.

Elementary school students from throughout Idaho this fall dedicated their crayons, colored pencils, markers and talent to ITD’s campaign for highway safety. The best of their artwork is included in the transportation department’s 2008 Highway Safety Kids’ Calendar.

They would have known better in Idaho

GMAC, in a report summarized by CNN last week, indicated that 36 million drivers, or roughly the population of California, would have failed their driver’s test if they had to take it today. Fifty-five percent of the respondents didn’t know how many feet before making a left or right turn to activate their turn signals (no mention was made about how many drivers know what turn signals are used for);

18-year history of efficiencies presented to board
ITD completed an extensive review of the way it delivers products and services and will continue to look for innovative ways to make operations even more efficient in the future. Idaho Transportation Board members reviewed a preliminary report on efficiencies that cover ITD operations from 1994 to 2012.

Highways
ITD introduces improved 511 Web sites
Recent improvements to Idaho’s 511 Traveler Services Web site will help motorists become better informed about winter conditions on highways and make better travel decisions. Visitors to the Web site – 511.idaho.gov – will find two options. A low-bandwith site is provided for Internet users who access the Web through dial-up connections, and a faster version that uses higher bandwidths.

Fernandez named Roadway Design Engineer
Nestor Frenandez, who has helped guide Idaho’s largest-ever infrastructure program the past two years, today was named ITD’s new Roadway Design Engineer. He succeeds Damon Allen who left the position to become the District 1 engineer in Coeur d’Alene earlier this year.

ITD brochure clarifies outdoor sign regulations
A new ITD campaign will help property owners and businesses owners/operators avoid the headaches of having their road side advertising signs removed. The campaign, which includes a new brochure and Web design, will educate residents and business owners on what is allowed on property bordering state and federal highways in Idaho.

Dennis Glynn walks to top of fitness challenge
A record number of ITD employees took major steps – literally and figuratively – toward better health this year by participating in the department’s annual fitness challenge. Nearly every team stepped up with higher employee participation, according to a summary of the 2007 Idaho Centennial Trail challenge. The concluding report indicates 675 employees, representing every district and every division completed the 10-week challenge.
