Transportation Board tours District 6, holds monthly meeting in Island Park
The transportation board concluded its final tour of the year of ITD districts Sept. 17 by traveling from Idaho Falls north to West Yellowstone, Mont. The board met with the Montana Transportation Commission to discuss issues of mutual concern, such as interstate speed limits, overlegal loads, and the Disadvantaged Business Enterprise program. The board then returned south on U.S. 20 to Harriman State Park in the Island Park vicinity, where it conducted its business meeting Sept. 18.

Winter Driving
Studded tires legal on Idaho's highways beginning Oct. 1
Drivers can once again use studded tires on Idaho roadways beginning Oct. 1, the Idaho Transportation Department announced. Idaho state law allows the use of studded tires Oct. 1 - April 30 each year. Driving with studded tires outside of that timeframe is a non-moving equipment violation with a fine of $67, according to the Idaho State Police.

Safest - and most dangerous - U.S. cities to drive: Boise makes top of the list
Drivers in Fort Collins, Colo., can take another bow before calmly climbing behind the wheel. For the fourth time in a decade, Allstate has named it "America's Safest Driving City" in its annual analysis of car accidents. Boise, Idaho, was ranked third for safe drivers by the insurance company.

New data shows odds Idaho drivers will collide with a deer are on the decline
Idaho drivers are nearly six percent less likely to collide with a deer in the next 12 months than they were last year, according to new claims data from State Farm. The odds drivers will hit a deer in Idaho in the coming year are 1 out of 172, compared to the national odds of 1 in 169.

Emergency Preparedness
Managing incident scenes and basic weather training offered in October
October training opportunities are available for people to help keep motorists safer on Idaho highways and prepare for the unexpected. The Traffic Incident Management workshop, Oct. 7 and 8, will train ITD workers, especially foremen, lead workers and other maintenance personnel, on the basics of managing incident scenes and how to train others to respond in their own communities.

A District 2 senior transportation technician has been named the Idaho Transportation Department’s Safety Person of the Year. Tyrell Winther, of the Potlatch Maintenance Shed, is also an emergency medical technician and a volunteer with the Potlatch Rural Fire Department.

TIGER Grant
Encore: (9-19-2014) Federal grant awards U.S. 95 northern Idaho project $7.4 million in TIGER funds
The Idaho Transportation Department was awarded $7.4 million in federal funding to complete the U.S. 95 Worley North Stage project in north Idaho. The award represents 80 percent of the overall $9.25 million needed to complete the project. The grant was awarded on an 80/20 match basis.

Encore: (9-19-2014) Whitewater Park renovations coming down the pike
More than a few ITD headquarters employees walk around the pond or otherwise take advantage of Whitewater Park, so the latest plans from the city of Boise for renovations to the park south of ITD might be of interest. Plans are to get started on river activities over the winter and then to continue work for 18 months.

Encore: (9-19-2014) GARVEE continues transforming Treasure Valley roadways
Seven months into construction on Interstate 84 in the Treasure Valley, new pavement and bridges are starting to take shape. ITD is rebuilding the Gowen, Broadway and Meridian interchanges and improving seven miles of I-84 near the interchanges.

Encore: (9-19-2014) New girders arrive for Lardo Bridge rebuild in McCall
The first three girders for the new Lardo Bridge in McCall on Idaho 55 were delivered to the site Thursday (Sept. 11). These first three girders were set on the far north side of the temporary structure, with the remaining three girders set on Sept. 17. The girders are approximately 157 feet long and weigh 197,000 lbs. apiece.
