Dwight Horsch appointed to 6-year term on transportation board
Twenty-five years ago Dwight Horsch was concluding his service in the Idaho Legislature where he spent three terns in the House and a single term in the expanded Senate. With much soul-searching and great reluctance, he decided his potato farm needed his undivided attention more than the Legislature, so he returned to the eastern Idaho soil. Although the intervening years included appointments to governing and agricultural boards, his latest assignment will draw heavily from the eight years he spent in the Legislature.

Rearden rises to top of class in annual 'roadeo'
District 1 produced the top individual while District 3 finished as the top four-person team this week in the state Roadeo finals at the maintenance facility in Athol, north of Coeur d'Alene. Mike Rearden finished nearly 80 points higher than his closest rival to win the individual title Tuesday (June 14).

Safe Routes to School
Ceremony celebrates safer routes to Nampa school
Students attending Ronald Reagan Elementary School in Nampa have a safer way to get to school after completion of a new segment of sidewalk that connects residential areas to the school located on Southside Boulevard. A $100,000 award from the Idaho Safe Routes to School (SR2S) program funded the sidewalk project. A ribbon-cutting ceremony, held May 19, marked the completion of Nampa’s first SR2S-funded project.

Governor gets aerial view of Dover Bridge construction
Gov. C.L. "Butch" Butch Otter recently visited Bonner County and had the opportunity to get a “bird’s eye” view of the Dover Bridge construction project. The governor flew over the project site in a Black Hawk helicopter. The bridge is being built using ARRA (American Reinvestment and Recovery Act) funds

New Idaho Traffic Safety Commission members introduced
New members appointed to the Idaho Traffic Safety Commission (ITSC) met last week to review ITD’s Highway Safety Performance Plan. This was the first meeting for many in the group who reviewed and then approved implementing the plan. Joining Chairman Scott Stokes and commission member Ginger Floerchinger-Franks, of the Idaho Trauma Registry, are the following new members:

Perkins on road to recovery
It's been a long road to recovery for a supervisor with the Idaho Transportation Department. Claylon Perkins was hit by a car when he stopped to help somebody out. Not many people can say they survived getting hit by a car on the interstate but Claylon Perkins can.

New wildlife fence to prommote safety, reduce crashes
An 18-mile fence being installed along Interstate 15 between Pocatello and Inkom in southeastern Idaho will likely reduce the number of collisions with wildlife and make the route safer for motorists, officials say. Officials with Idaho Fish and Game said that at least 100 deer are killed annually on the highway.

Aeronautics (Encore: 6-10-11)
Workshops help teachers incorporate aviation in lessons
ITD’s Division of Aeronautics will sponsor three two-day Teacher Aviation Workshops next month, demonstrating how aviation subjects can be incorporated into regular classroom lessons. Three workshops are planned: Bird Aviation Museum, Sandpoint, July 14-15; Idaho Falls, July 25-26; and Caldwell, July 28-29. Although the workshops are intended primarily for teachers of grades 6-12, the lessons are appropriate for all grades.
