Project maps wildlife paths across U.S. 20 in Island Park
A four-year collaborative study in the Island Park area regarding wildlife-related hazards and improved safety on U.S. 20 and Idaho 87 has been completed. The study focused primarily on moose and elk behavior and their movements across U.S. 20. ITD recorded 169 collisions with wildlife on the stretch of U.S. 20 between Ashton and Island Park from 2005 to 2009, resulting in moose, elk and deer fatalities, and millions of dollars in vehicle damage.

Crossovers return on I-84 from Meridian to Five Mile
Throughout the last week (Feb. 10–15), crews were placing a new traffic pattern on Interstate 84 between Meridian and Five Mile roads. Implementation of the traffic pattern was weather dependent.

Innovative project that replaced McCall’s Lardo Bridge wins excellence award
The project to replace the 83-year-old Lardo Bridge in McCall, open to traffic since November 2014, won a recent “Excellence in Concrete” award from the Intermountain Chapter of the American Concrete Institute.

Cascade Police Department coordinates “Buckle Up” event for students
Over the course of five or six hours early last November, Officer Eric Littlejohn of the Cascade Police Department coordinated a “Buckle Up” safety event at the Cascade Junior/Senior High School. The event featured a simulated crash, and focused on the importance of buckling up. Hundreds of students of all ages attended the presentation.

Encore (02-06-15): 2015: Combating Distracted Driving
The Office of Highway Safety has declared 2015 as the year of combating distracted driving in Idaho. It is no secret that distracted driving contributes in a large way to fatal and serious injury crashes on all our roadways. Efforts to eliminate distracted driving should at least match the efforts used to encourage seat belt usage and fighting impaired driving.

Encore (02-06-13): Farrell, Klopman promoted in District 1 maintenance
Ross Farrell (St. Maries) and Tom Klopman (Sandpoint) were recently promoted to foremen positions within the District 1 maintenance family, overseeing nearly 600 miles of roadway, 25 employees and a big happy family.
