Buhl fifth-graders make toothpick bridges
Every May, ITD’s south-central Idaho office makes a point to break the bridges that Buhl Elementary School fifth-graders have painstakingly created. Rather than being seen as cruel or vindictive, the exercise is viewed with anticipation and wide grins.

District 3
Steiner(s), Freeman, camaraderie highlight D3 equipment roadeo
District 3’s Truck Rodeo carried on a tradition of camaraderie, while transportation techs navigated their way through two obstacle courses by way of loaders and snowplows. Receiving top honors in Garden Valley this year was the crew, all out of New Meadows maintenance shed, including a father/son duo.

Rigby, Wooley, Stanley repeat top positions in D4 roadeo
The top foreman and top two finishers from 2015 are headed to the state Roadeo once again following the District 4 equipment roadeo June 7 in Twin Falls.

Maupin, Robinson repeat wins in District 6 equipment roadeo
Two winners from last year's competition repeated that performance June 9 in Idaho Falls, as Trent Maupin and Scott Robinson again took home the hardware. Maupin, of Sugar City maintenance, earned 1,953 points to outpace the rest of the field in the TT series. Robinson, also of Sugar City maintenance, won the foreman division with 1,835 points.

District 1 celebrates employees with feast June 2
More than 80 District 1 employees participated in the Employee Appreciation barbecue and service award recognition on Thursday, June 2 in Coeur d’Alene. District leadership prepared and cooked the food for the annual event.

Idaho Transportation Board
ITD board to tour D3 projects, discuss appropriation request, review ITIP and talk truck rules
The Idaho Transportation Board returns to the Treasure Valley for its monthly meeting June 15-16. On Wednesday, June 15, the board will tour District 3 where plans include meeting with the mayors of Middleton and Nampa, and visiting the Broadway Bridge construction project and the new Esther Simplot Whitewater Park, still being developed, in Boise.

Emerging leaders Barrus, Bathrick, Hubbard participate in WASHTO program
Three of ITD’s rising stars are participating in the Emerging Leaders program through the Western Association of State Highway Transportation Officials (WASHTO). Ultimately, participants are expected to apply these newly gained skills and knowledge to their agencies.

Encore (06-03-16): Masked pirate reminds Boise drivers to put phones down
People waving signs along roadways are fairly common, but a masked “pirate’ encouraging motorists to put their phones down was a surprising morning sight for Boise drivers passing the Idaho Transportation Department Headquarters building May 18.
