U.S.
Transportation Secretary Norman Y. Mineta, head
of the U.S. Department of Transportation, will speak
at a noon luncheon at the Boise Centre on the Grove.
Arrangements also are pending for him to tour several
locations in the Treasure Valley to look at transportation
projects.

drivers among most knowledgeable and safest
Commuters
who travel to and from work daily on Idaho’s
interstate highways might think they’ve
entered the Twilight Zone, congestion, delays,
impatient drivers… In reality, they are
traveling among the most knowledgeable and safest
drivers in the nation. Two reports released recently
confirm that Idaho drivers know what they’re
doing on the highways and that crashes are far
below the national norm.

recent survey indicates that drivers, especially
those in the Northeast, need to study the basics
to become motor vehicle operators.

leads the way in alternative transportation use
ITD
employees take the department’s role in promoting
transportation options very seriously – and
personally. During a special alternative transportation
promotion last month in the Treasure Valley, ITD recorded
a 37 percent increase in the number of employees accessing
their work site by means other than a one-person occupied
vehicle. That includes public transportation, vanpool
and car pool participation and alternative travel
such as bicycle and walking.

school junior tries director's chair for size
Nicolette
Jacobson, a high school junior from Irwin, about 50
miles east of Idaho Falls, became head of the Idaho
Transportation Department briefly this afternoon while
Director Dave Ekern attended a transportation board
meeting in Rigby, about six miles north of Idaho Falls.

to key transportation positions. An
international organization helps enhance
the progress, and may add a local chapter

Boise
conference emphasizes need for biofuel
The U.S. needs
a consistent energy policy that will lessen
future uncertainty and encourage development
of biofuels and lessen dependence on fossil
fuel, according to Charles Peterson, University
of Idaho interim engineering dean. Peterson
spoke during a recent Boise conference,
“Bio Fuels Production and the New
West."

IDAHO
magazine seeks local recipes
IDAHO
magazine is sponsoring its first recipe
contest. There will be three categories
for recipes: main dishes, desserts and a
general category for all other recipes.
Each category will have a $100 cash prize
for first place. Plaques will be presented
for first, second and third places in each
category, with certificates for honorable
mentions.
