STIP released for review, public comment
ITD recently released the draft Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) for fiscal years 2011-2014 for public review and comment. The document identifies approximately $2 billion in transportation-related projects planned for construction through the year 2014. Included are projects for highways, bicycle and pedestrian paths, transit and aeronautics. The draft plan also includes continued authorizations of the GARVEE Transportation Program as approved by the Idaho Legislature.

Motor vehicles
DMV hosts annual Region IV AAMVA conference
ITD’s Division of Motor Vehicles served as host to this year’s AAMVA (American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators) Region IV Conference, June 29-July 1 in Boise. Nearly 320 motor vehicles administrators and officials joined more than 115 jurisdictional representatives for the Boise event.

ITD's Labar cruises South in '65 Mustang
Mountain Home Maintenance Foreman Dave Labar has a deep love for the classics, especially cars. He owns three - a 1951 Ford sedan, 1964 Ford Galaxy 500 convertible, and a 1970 AMC Javelin SST. Even the car he drives daily would be considered classic, a 1971 MGB/GT. Dave picked up the 1970 Javelin 38 years ago. The Galaxies and sedan followed. The “Love Affair” had begun.

McGuire defends Roadeo title; D-4 leads districts
Having the eventual state champion, as well as the top overall team, helped the District 4 squad come out on top in the ITD state Roadeo championships, held June 15 at the Idaho Falls Maintenance Shed. Peter McGuire repeated his 2008 victory with a 30-point win over Bruce Dial from District 5, and by 32 over Troy Stone of District 6, the third-place finisher.

Shedding new light(s) on I-84/Vista interchange
The new 125-foot-long, 13,000-lb. SPUI traffic signal was installed at the Interstate 84/Vista Avenue Interchange Tuesday night as reconstruction in Boise overnight nears completion. The expansive traffic signal will not be operational immediately though. It will take several weeks for crews to wire and test the 12-head signal. Construction on the entire $17.8 million project is expected to be complete late this summer.

ITD helps reopen Oregon Trailhead center
Ada County officials will officially reopen the Oregon Trailhead on the east side of Highway 21 in East Boise with a Tuesday (July 13) ribbon-cutting. The event highlights a 15-year collaboration. Partners include: Ada County, JR Simplot Corporation, The Idaho State Historic Preservation Office, the Idaho Transportation Department, Idaho Parks and Recreation Department, Boise City Parks and Recreation Department, the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, and the Oregon-California Trail Association.

Public shares concerns about U.S. 12 transport proposal
Three public meetings in north-central Idaho this week drew near capacity crowds as residents and concerned citizens commented on a proposal to move oversized loads on U.S. 12. Imperial Oil and its parent company Exxon-Mobil propose moving 207 loads from the Port of Lewiston to the Kearl oil sands extraction site in Alberta, Canada.

Accolades
Vista, airport kiosk claims national award
ITD, Connecting Idaho Partners and the GARVEE office won a highway safety award in early June at the American Road & Transportation Builders Association Transportation Development Foundation’s (ARTBA-TDF) 12th annual “Roadway Work Zone Safety Awareness Awards” event. The award was announced during the 2010 International Bridge Conference in Pittsburgh.
