ITD
provides construction-free holiday
Most
work on highway construction projects
throughout Idaho will be suspended this
afternoon until Tuesday (Sept. 7) to
accommodate holiday traffic during the
Labor Day weekend. Nearly 40 highway
improvement projects are under way throughout
the state. Traffic impacts already in
place, such as lane restrictions, detours
and reduced speed limits, may continue
during the holiday weekend.

Strait,
Fox promoted to new positions
Mark
Strait and Liza Fox have been named to new
positions that evolved from the departments
restructuring process. Strait has been promoted
to Highway Safety Grant Manager for the Idaho
Office of Traffic and Highway Safety, while
Fox was chosen for the new position of Chief
Technology Officer.

Walking
group honored for highway cleanups
Organized
as a way of providing exercise and social interaction,
the Monday Striders of Bonners Ferry recently
was honored for its efforts to keep a two-mile
section of U.S. 95 free of litter. The Idaho
Transportation Board presented the entire group
a certificate and plaque during a recent meeting
in District 1.

'One
Stop Shop' to conduct commercial trucking
seminars statewide
Changing
national security has ushered in an era of
new state and federal regulations that affect
commercial truck drivers and operators of
trucking companies in Idaho. The Idaho Transportation
Departments Motor Carrier Services office
will conduct a series of seminars entitled
"A Whole New World of Service" throughout
the state this fall to explain regulations
that affect commercial truck drivers and operators
of trucking companies.

Walk
to School will highlight need for safe
routes
The
importance of providing safe routes to
schools is a critical part of transportation.
Idaho expects to join other states across
the nation next year in focusing resources
to improve school routes and ensure children
the carefree journey they should expect.
The need for safe routes is clear. In
Idaho last year, 57 children ages 4-14
were injured in pedestrian crashes, and
another 110 children in the same age range
were involved in bicycle crashes.

Journey
to Athens improves employee fitness
More
than 500 ITD employees are breathing easier
today because they are in much better
physical condition than they were before
heading to Athens. ITDs annual fitness
challenge, created to encourage physical
fitness through regular exercise, appropriately
adopted an Olympics theme this year. Logging
the hours spent in qualifying physical
activity for a 10-week period took participants
closer to Athens, Greece, and gold medals.

Workshop
to focus on benefits of biodiesel
The
advantages of using biodiesel fuel for public
or private transportation will be the topic
of a national workshop to be held Thursday
and Friday, Sept. 9-10, in Boise's Centre
on the Grove. The workshop is the kickoff
event of a five-year, national U.S. Department
of Agriculture grant awarded to the University
of Idaho. The $950,000 grant will bring
nationwide education to the public about
biodiesel fuels made from oil crops.

Court
rules Indian fuel sales cannot be taxed
A federal appellate court Thursday (Aug.
26) upheld the ban preventing the state
from taxing motor fuel sold on Indian
reservations. In a 2-to-1 ruling, the
U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals agreed
with the Coeur d'Alene, Nez Perce and
Shoshone-Bannock tribes that such taxation
violated tribal sovereignty and could
create a barrier to interstate commerce.
