ITD improves safety at crossing following teenagers' fatal crash
After a fatal crash Aug. 7 killed two local high school students, residents and officials came together expressing concern for the safety of the intersection on US-20 just south of St. Anthony. ITD, Eastern Idaho Railroad, local officials and residents worked out a short-term plan for the railroad crossing.

Keeping the budget from flaring up
All ITD maintenance vehicles carry flares in case of emergency, but they can be damaged rolling around loose in the back of a rig. Bill Foust in District 2 solved that problem: New cases are expected to save D2 more than $5,000 this year.

The public has long confused ITD and ACHD. There is some occasional overlap, but generally we stay on our own side of the road. That misunderstanding about roles and responsibilities was the catalyst for a new hybrid position during the early days of the 1990s and the Connector.

Emergency Management
ITD co-sponsors Traffic Incident Management Systems (TIMS) training Sept. 10
Federal, state and local agencies converged on Gowen Field Sept. 10 for the Traffic Incident Management Train-the-Trainer Course, sponsored by FHWA and ITD. The course is meant to increase the effectiveness of mutual aid from responders, identify measures that improve safety during incidents, and build geographical area coalitions between partners.

D5’s Kunz creates Saddle Tank fill system for six-wheeled trucks
The old fill system for the brine salt prewetting system on the department’s six-wheeled trucks was slow and uneven. So this spring, District 5’s DeLoy Kunz, a Transportation Tech. out of the Montpelier maintenance shed, decided to fix that problem.

ITD From the Vault: 1958: Dreamers, workers, and Déjà vu
Elvis Presley was beginning a stint in the U.S. Army. The average home price was under $13,000. Wages, on average, were approximately $4,600 per year. A gallon of gas cost about a quarter. NASA was created. And the Idaho Highway Board was being skewered, except in Twin Falls.
