Public Transportation
Transit information to be included on 511 system
The ITD Division of Public Transportation will partner with the Division of Highways to fund a major enhancement to Idaho’s Traveler Information Service (511), integrating transit-related information and making the system truly multi-modal. Soon, transit users will be able to obtain information regarding statewide public transportation services.

Engineering
Girls learn engineering can be a fun, challenging career
Monica Crider, ITD engineer, and Erika Stoddard, an ITD engineer in training, told high school sophomores and juniors that “scientists typically research and discover new theories and engineers apply them to create solutions. Engineers can be fun people, not boring ‘shoe watchers...” said Crider recently at a workshop for girls interested in the engineering profession.

Highways
Farewell sendoff set Wednesday for Hutchinson
Friends and colleagues will assemble next week to wish Steve Hutchinson well as he trades the panoramic view from his second-story Headquarters office for the vistas of golf greens. Co-workers invite Steve’s friends to “join us for cake and fun as we celebrate his many accomplishments and send him on his way.” The farewell will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday (June 25) in the auditorium at Headquarters. His last official day at ITD will be Friday (June 27).

Newcomers vault to top of 'Roadeo' ladder
In a sense, it was a changing of the guard… several new drivers emerged  as top performers at the state roadeo competition recently held at the Shoshone/Twin Falls maintenance shed in District 4. Six district roadeos and the culminating state finals test the knowledge and skills of ITD equipment operators.  Pete McGuire of District 4 and Mike Allen of District 2 earned trips to the national competition this fall in Colorado, and Martin Meyers of District 3 trailed close behind in third.

Highway Safety
Popularity of scooters prompts awareness
Warm weather and soaring gasoline prices have more Idahoans parking cars and trucks at home and trying motor scooters as a less expensive means to commute to work, shop and complete other daily tasks. Many recent motor scooter buyers in Idaho are new to riding and have little experience riding in traffic, do not wear proper safety gear and fail to understand the risks of riding two-wheeled vehicles.

Awards
Excellence in Transporation awards to be presented Thursday
Several highway projects and the professionals who conceived them will be honored next week during the 2008 Excellence in Transportation Awards program at ITD Headquarters. The awards ceremony will be Thursday (June 26) from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the auditorium at Headquarters. Refreshments will be available afterward in the lobby.

ITD claims bronze for May In Motion
ITD was among seven organizations or businesses that earned the bronze level of participation in the annual May In Motion alternative transportation promotion this year. The annual contest is based on the participation level by individuals, the number of subsidies or incentives offered and the number of internal promotions.

Public involvement guide wins marketing award
The Interstate-84, Orchard to Gowen Hearing Guide received a Platinum Award, the highest honor from the MarCom Awards for the I-84, Orchard to Gowen Hearing Guide, in the category of in the category of Brochure/Consumer Awareness. The MarCom Awards is an international creative competition that recognizes outstanding achievement by marketing and communication professionals.

ITD retiree inducted into Idaho Engineering Hall of Fame
Jim Pline, whose contributions to the engineering profession date back more than 50 years to 1954, was inducted into the Idaho Engineering Hall of Fame during the organization’s annual meeting recently in Boise. Pline retired after 35 years from ITD as the roadway design supervisor at Headquarters in 1987,

Girls State
Hazelton teen takes ITD reins... symbolically
Of the 300 girls participating in the annual Girls State leadership conference, 10 percent were chosen to visit with some of the state’s largest public employers, and Olivia Tateoko of Hazelton (just outside of Rupert) was among the special delegates. She was chosen to to symbolically head the Idaho Transportation Department.

Division of Administration
Tolman to return as administrator Monday (June 23)
After a short interlude at the Idaho Department of  Labor, Dave Tolman will return Monday (June 23) to resume his previous role as administrator of the Division of Administration at ITD. Director Pam Lowe announced his selection Wednesday. Tolman served as controller for almost six years before being named head of the division last August. He joined ITD in 2001 after service in the State Controller’s Office and the Division of Financial Management.

Alan Frew shows how to go with the flow
Alan Frew, administrator of the Division of Motor Vehicles, often feels as though he is a fish swimming upstream. He reinforced that perception recently when DMV staff assembled for their quarterly meeting.

Safety
Poisoning among most common causes of household deaths
In recognition of National Safety Month, the Transporter will publish a series of articles to promote safety. The ITD Safety Team encourages employees to put an extra focus this month into weekly safety meetings at work and to use the information at home as applicable. The focus this week is on poison prevention.

D-3's John Gray turns horsepower into trophies
If you have a need for speed, and tight, hairpin turns with thundering horsepower don’t bother you, you needed to be in Marsing on Saturday (June 7). That’s where you’d have found the United States Sprint Boat Association (USSBA) setting up shop for the afternoon, and that’s where you’d have found District 3’s John Gray, waiting in his Super Modified #611 boat.

District IMAP 'coaches' announced

Randy Kyrias, Administrator of ITD’s Public Transportation division this week announced the selection of the first team of “coaches” for the new District Coordination Council. The council is part of Idaho’s Mobility Access Pathway (IMAP) that governs the future of public transportation.

ITD helps state police produce escape ramp video
When all else fails, a truck driver needs to know what to do. In such a situation, runaway truck ramps are the last resort for truck drivers to avoid disaster. The Idaho State Police Multimedia Group, in cooperation with the Idaho Transportation Department and Swift Transportation, videotaped the use of a runaway truck ramp on the Lewiston Hill on Wednesday morning.

In Memoriam

Fred Springer, 87

Fred Springer, a retired, 20-year ITD employee, passed away last weekend at a Nampa care facility at the age of 87. As a maintenance worker in District 3, Springer devoted his career to keeping highways plowed and snow-free in the winter and looked forward to the challenge of round-the-clock plowing when weather and highway conditions turned bad.
