Gov. Otter to lead Twin Falls groundbreaking

Governor C.L. "Butch" Otter will lead a groundbreaking ceremony on Monday (Sept. 14), at 10:30 a.m., to formally begin construction of the Twin Falls Alternate Route Stage 2. The $26.6 million project will create jobs, stimulate economic activity, improve motorist safety and reduce congestion through Twin Falls.

Sand Creek Byway making steady progress
The Sand Creek Byway project remains on schedule as the contractor begins to wrap up the first season of construction. Work will shift to other activities after Oct. 15 when ground-disturbing activities will be put aside for the winter. Volunteers sought for winter snow plowing
So… you’ve mastered the art of clearing your front sidewalk of winter snow. Perhaps you’ve also become an expert at shoveling your driveway. Are you ready for a real primetime challenge? Do you want to become a snow king or queen? Consider spending some time in the cab of a 10-wheel ITD snowplow with a box of sand or a tank of deicer on the back.

Road trip planned to Wood River Valley

The Idaho Transportation Board will complete its 2009 statewide tour and business meeting schedule with a visit to the Wood River Valley in District 6 Wednesday (Sept. 16). Some of the day’s activities include a visit to the Timmerman Rest Area, which will be reconstructed soon; an update on the proposal to relocate Friedman Memorial Airport (Hailey Airport); a visit with Mountain Rides Transportation Authority officials; and an update on the Idaho 75 corridor plans.

ITD's Kacie McDonald and horse add spark to BSU home games

Kacie McDonald hoped to give her horse Kade a pretty good workout in the arena last weekend. But it’s not your typical equestrian event in front of judges and an equine-savvy audience or rodeo fans. The crowd included some 30,000 fans whose focus on football was interrupted every time the Boise State Broncos scored a touchdown or field goal in their non-conference match up with Miami University of Ohio.

Workshop helps employees cope with change

When trying to make cents (sense) of it all, it’s logical to begin with change – literally and figuratively. That’s exactly where administrative personnel from throughout the state began their 21st annual Administrative Support Workshop in Meridian Thursday. This year’s theme was Making Cents of It All. Change has been a standard at ITD the past five years – predating the current recession.

Team working on employee recognition concepts
A team of ITD employees has been charged with proposing new and innovative ways to recognize individual achievement. This team was formed as a result of the department’s strategic plan. The nine-member Employee Reward and Recognition sub-team is organized under the “Investing in Our People” focus area team. Its purpose, according to the team charter, is to “identify monetary and non-monetary employee reward program best-practices appropriate to ITD’s culture and budgetary constraints.

Demonstrations focus on child safety seats

In advance of Child Passenger Safety Week this week,, ITD will offer special child car safety seat demonstrations for media and public. Two certified safety technicians from Safe Kids Treasure Valley – Alissa McKinley and Jeanette Rich – were on hand in Boise Friday (Sept. 11) to go through the steps for properly installing child car seats and booster seats.

Steps you can take to reduce risks

Surface contact is one of the primary ways H1N1 Flu is being transferred. Keep your office, meeting space and eating surfaces clean. Don't touch your eyes, nose, or mouth with your hands. Limit handshaking and cover sneezes with your elbow. Stay home if you are sick.

Workshops planned planning for emergencies

Emergency Preparedness Month provides an ideal opportunity to assess how well we are prepared to handle an unexpected emergency – natural or man-caused. Paul Marusich of the Ada City County Emergency Management office will present three informational sessions for ITD employees in southwest Idaho next week to help them become better prepared for family or work emergencies.

Excavation begins on Dover Bridge
Construction of a new Dover Bridge began Aug. 24 as contractor’s crews started excavation on the project. Work will include hauling material from a nearby gravel source to the project site.

“Hang up the phone, especially in a school zone!” That reminder comes as schools across Idaho resume for another year. Jo O’Connor, Safe Routes to School coordinator for the Idaho Transportation Department, urges motorists to focus on driving and children around school zones, not on cell phones and text messaging.

Employees who take advantage of the help desk function of Enterprise Technology Services (ETS) might be asked to provide an assessment of the services rendered. To support its commitment to customer service, ETS is launching a new online customer satisfaction survey that includes about eight questions related to the value of the help they received.

Precautions can help in battle against H1N1 - swine flu

By now, you have most likely heard about the Novel H1N1 flu virus, formerly known as the swine flu virus. Cases of this new flu virus were first detected in people in the U.S. last spring and have continued to spread worldwide. Throughout the summer, cases have also continued to appear in Ada County and Idaho. As of the end of August, there have been 281 cases of the flu around the state.

Production of a workforce training video is planned next week on Idaho 52 between Black Canyon Dam and the Sweet/Montour junction, mileposts 39 to 45. Filming of a video for Idaho filmmakers and camera operators will take place between 5 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, Friday and Sunday (Sept. 10, 11 and 13). A cadre of about 15 people is expected to participate in the project that is could result in delays of 10-15 minutes for motorists.
