Peer review
Board to hear report on ACE recommendations
A peer review of the department’s engineering services has produced positive recommendations that will help ITD provide better service and become more efficient, Director Pamela Lowe said. Employees are encouraged to watch the presentation to the transportation board on Thursday through the department’s video conferencing system or in the auditorium.  A summary of the presentation will be posted on the Intranet after the board meeting, and the full report will be made available to employees when it is completed next month.

Employee survey
Benchmarking survey available online
Employees are most productive in a work environment that recognizes and values their contributions and promotes opportunities for professional growth. ITD administrators, with support from the transportation board, have commissioned a study to assess the strengths of the work environment and identify areas where improvement is needed. The survey is available now for employees to complete online.

Maintenance
Two ITD employees compete at national event
Two ITD maintenance employees experienced the rigors of national competition for equipment operating and knowledge for the first time this year. Mike Allen, of the District 2 Bovill maintenance facility, and Pete McGuire, District 4, Fairfield maintenance, joined Rex Hufford at the 2008 Western Snow & Ice Conference in Estes Park, Colo., this fall.

Transportation board
Report focuses on Practical Design of rest areas
The Practical Design concept of reviewing projects to determine what changes could be made to reduce the project scope and cost without compromising the overall intent of the project or jeopardizing safety has been applied to the Safety Rest Area Program. In a presentation to the Idaho Transportation Board next week, staff members will elaborate on efforts undertaken to evaluate the rest area facilities programmed in FY09-13.

Bridges

Farrar chosen to head national technical committee
Matt Farrar, ITD’s Bridge Engineer, recently was appointed chairman of an AASHTO (American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials) subcommittee on bridges. He will head the T-18 Technical Committee for Bridge Management, Evaluation and Rehabilitation. It is one of 20 technical committees organized under AASHTO’s subcommittee on Bridges and Structures.

Headquarters to present service awards Thursday
The Idaho Transportation Board and employees at Headquarters will honor colleagues next week who have reached career milestones, including nine veteran employees who retired during the first half of 2008. The service awards will be presented as part of the transportation board’s Thursday (Nov. 20) meeting in the Headquarters auditorium.

Joe Haynes
The transportation community in Idaho lost a friend and dedicated professional last week with the passing of Joe Haynes. Joe was the first and only administrator of the Local Highway Technical Assistance Council (LHTAC) until his retirement in September 2007

Networking
ITD network helps General Election process
Idahoans from Priest River to Preston, from Island Park to Murphy followed results of the 2008 general election through local media. They received regular updates on the Presidential and Congressional races, state legislative races and local issues. What they didn’t see, however, was the information network that connected offices in all 44 counties with the Secretary of State’s office in Boise.

Transportation funding
Survey shows support for increasing funds
Idahoans recognize the value of roads and bridges to the economy and their safety, and support raising fees to improve them, a survey shows. Idaho Highway Users, Inc. surveyed 600 Idahoans in September. Idaho Highway Users is a statewide group that was formed in the 1930s to promote good highways and bridges. The group conducted a similar survey in 1999.

Employee safety
Field employees challenged to find safety solutions
Cheryl Rost, Safety and Risk Management manager, recently provided an overview of the department’s escalating accident numbers and associated costs for ITD’s field employees during the annual “Toolbox” meetings. She challenged employees to develop specific actions or “crew plans” to reduce accidents and asked for the plans to be forwarded to the their respective district safety coordinators for review.
