Backcountry pilots descend on Johnson Creek airstrip
Backcountry aviators from throughout the country made their way to the mountains of Central Idaho last weekend for the eighth annual Johnson Creek SuperCub summer fly-in. The event, coordinated by Dave Kirsten, was created in 2006 as a rendezvous for recreational aviators.

To provide support for smaller towns in southwest Idaho that need planning and traffic assistance, ITD has increased its outreach efforts. Those services not only will ease the workload on staffs in the small communities, they will save money by eliminating the need for consultants,.

The sky's the limit for students attending ACE Academy
A group of adventurous students will explore potential careers from the ground level next week – but their ultimate goal is much higher, several thousand feet higher. Twenty-eight teenagers in grades 9-12 will be part of the annual ACE (Aviation Career Exploration) Academy.

District 5's Dial claims roadeo title
The ITD truck & equipment roadeo, held Tuesday in Garden Valley, produced the first state title for District 5’s Bruce Dial. District 3’s Brad Steiner followed in second place while Trent Maupin of District 6 took third.

Governor thanks ITD staff for dedication ceremony
Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter declared the one-hour ceremony to dedicate ITD’s Headquarters the “Philip E. Batt Building” a resounding success.The governor’s staff and ITD employees worked closely to stage the June 13 event to honor Gov. Batt’s many contributions.

Students learn from fun exhibits, hands-on projects
Flashing lights and fog made the Headquarters auditorium look more like a rave party than the ITD boardroom. But that was just good fun for the nearly 100 middle-school students from Canyon County and the Pocatello area. The students participated in an engineering field trip to ITD Wednesday (June 12).

ITD earns 'silver' status for alternative commutes
ITD employees in the Treasure Valley learned this week there is a silver lining behind every stalled car or interstate traffic backup. The silver comes in the form of recognition for ITD’s participation in the annual May In Motion campaign, sponsored by the Ada County Highway District’s Commuteride.

The Community Transportation Association of Idaho is accepting public comments through mid-July on its draft Rural Transportation Assistance Program (RTAP) application. The RTAP is a federal program established and funded by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA).

Son of D-3's Garz claims track title
Daniel Garz, son of District 3 program management’s Michael Garz, won the 4A state title in 800-meter run at the recent state track meet at Eagle High School. His winning time was 1:57.12, less than a second in front of a runner from Pocatello.

Encore (6-14-13): Building dedication a tribute to Gov. Phil Batt
Freedom Idaho” flowed from a well-used clarinet played by a well-practiced musician Thursday morning. They obviously were old friends – the instrument and master. Words and music captured a love of Idaho, its rugged geography and rich history. It also underscored Gov. Phil Batt’s commitment to the place he calls home.

Idaho Governor C.L. “Butch” Otter formally dedicated the Idaho Transportation Department Headquarters in Boise Thursday, June 13, in honor of Philip E. Batt, Idaho’s 29th governor. Past governors, legislators, elected officials and friends joined Governor Otter to formally name the building.

Encore (6-14-13): ITD maintenance prepares for air ambulance need
ITD’s maintenance crews are often the first – and in rural areas, sometimes the only - responders to incidents requiring an air ambulance. In those cases, ITD is called on to establish designated “Landing Zones” on or near highways to facilitate a rescue.
